Chicken Sunday by Patricia Polacco A touching story of interracial friendships. Patricia and her two Black friends want to buy the boys' grandma (Eula Mae) a new hat. The children witness an act of racism on the hat shop owned by the Holocaust survivor Mr. Kodinski. Mr. Kodinski incorrectly assumes that the children were responsible. The children's journey of love and service win Mr. Kodinski over when they make him Pysanky eggs to sell in his store. He tells them the story of his life and then gives the children the hat they wanted to earn. Chicken Sunday is named after the chicken dinner that Eula Mae made every Sunday after church. A great story that teaches multicultural and racial lessons. |
