By the Hanukkah Light by Sheldon Oberman, Neil Waldman (Illustrator) A story within a story in By the Hanukkah Light, a grandfather tells the story of Hanukkah and the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrians. He also shares his own experience of hiding as a Jew during World War II. Grandfather compares his battle to the battle of the Maccabees. Both were fighting their oppressors and both recognize a miracle. Granddaughter Rachel promises to tell the stories to her children, thus passing on the tradition of Hanukkah.
