Architect Henry Bacon modeled the Lincoln Memorial after the Greek Parthenon. It has 36 Doric columns that represent the states of the Union at the time of Lincoln's assassination in 1865. The names of the 48 states at the time of the Memorial's completion are inscribed along the building's frieze.
