1837 Elected to the United States Senate.

1847 Served as brigadier general in the Mexican War.
1852 Elected President of the United States.
1853 The Gadsden Purchase was signed.
1853 Alexander Wood invented the hypodermic needle.
1853-1856 Britain, France, Turkey, and Sardinia fought against Russia in the Crimean War.
1854 About 400,000 immigrants arrived in New York.
