- James Buchanan was born in a log cabin and there were 11 children in his family.

- Buchanan helped defend Baltimore after the British burned Washington, DC during the War of 1812.

- Buchanan was in office when the Supreme Court made a ruling on the Dred Scott case. Dred Scott, a slave sued for his freedom because his master broght him to live in a free state. The court said Scott was property and not a citizen, so therefore he was not free. Tensions leading to the Civil War were mounting.

- Buchanan was the only president who did not marry.

- Buchanan was personally against slavery. He sometimes bought slaves just to set them free.
