- Carter grew up on a peanut farm in Georgia.

- Carter is the only U.S. president to have lived in housing subsidized for the poor.

- Carter served as a Christian Sunday school teacher throughout his life.

- After high school, Carter went to the United States Naval Academy and became a nuclear submarine engineer.

- James Carter, Jr was always known as Jimmy. He was sworn in as president as Jimmy Carter.

- During his presidency there was an energy crisis - causing a shortage of gasoline and high prices.

- In 1979, 52 Americans were captured at the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran by a group of Islamic students and militants. They weren't released until the day Carter left office.

- In 2002, after his presidency, Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work "to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development" through The Carter Center.
