- John Quincy Adams is the son of John Adams (2nd president of the U.S.)

- John Quincy Adams served as President Monroe's secretary of state and helped create the Monroe Doctrine.

- In the 1824 presidential election, no candidate had enough votes to win. Adams was running against Andrew Jackson and two other men. The House of Representatives decided that Adams was the winner.

- John Quincy Adams is the only president to serve in the House of Representatives AFTER leaving the White House. He fought against slavery.

- As president, Adams took early morning swims in the Potomac River.

- The Marquis de Lafayette gave John Quincy Adams a pet alligator. The alligator lived in the White House for several months.
