Other Interesting Facts and Trivia:

- Grant had 5 younger brothers and sisters.

- As a young boy, Grant trained horses.

- Grant attended the United States Military Academy. He fought in the American-Mexican War under Zachary Taylor.

- President Lincoln asked Grant to be in charge of the entire Union Army during the Civil War.

- President Grant's middle initial "S." is due to a mistake in documentation from a recommendation to West Point. Though Grant tried to correct it, the mistake stayed. His true full name is Hiram Ulysses Grant.

- Yellowstone National Park was established under Grant's leadership. It was the country's first national park.

- In 1881, Grant entered into an investment partnership with Ferdinand Ward. Ward mismanaged and embezzled Grant's assets. The firm of Ward and Grant went bankrupt and Ward went to jail. This partnership left Grant with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. Grant claimed bankruptcy. He was forced to sell his Civil War memoirs to save his family from further financial hardship.
