Billy Beg and His Bull: An Irish Tale by Ellin Greene, Kimberly Bulcken Root (Illustrator)
Great retelling of an old Irish tale for children. Billy's mother gives him a magic bull calf just before she dies. There is an evil stepmother that plots against him.The magic bull to helps him to escape. Before Billy's bull dies, he gives Billy three gifts - a magic napkin to keep him fed, a magic stick to give him strength and a magic bull-hide belt to keep him from harm. Using the bull's gifts, Billy defeats giants and saves a damsel in distress by slaying a dragon. During the dragon slaying, he looses a shoe. With Cinderella similarities, the damsel turns out to be a princess and is the temporary new owner of the shoe. She declares that she will marry the man who fits the shoe and "live happy and well from that day to this."
