The Dolch Word List is a list of frequently used words compiled by Edward William Dolch, PhD. The list was prepared in 1936 and originally published in his book Problems in Reading in 1948.
Dolch compiled the list based on children's books. The list contains 220 "service words" that have to be recognized in order to achieve reading fluency. Dolch included a separate compilation of 95 nouns.
Many of these words can't be sounded out using common phonics patterns and have to be learned by "sight." Although the list is divided into grades, most Dolch words should be mastered by the end of 1st grade for English speaking readers.
