 Flag Meaning: The ancient Zia symbol for sun appears in the center on a field of yellow. This symbol holds even a deeper meaning. To the Pueblo Indians, the number four is sacred. The Zia sun symbol has 4 rays going in 4 directions and each has a meaning: 4 directions (north, south, east, west), 4 seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter), 4 times of day (morning, noon, evening, night) and 4 stages of life (childhood, youth, adult, and old age). Finally, the center of the symbol represents the circle of life and 4 sacred obligations: strong body, clear mind, pure spirit and devotion to people's welfare. The colors of red and yellow represent the Spanish flag carried by Coronado in 1540. The flag was adopted in 1913. |
