The left figure represents Justice. An eagle perches on a globe at the top of the seal. A picture inside the shield shows the Atlantic Ocean and its shore. There is a NY river scene with mountains, ships, and the sun. The state motto appears below the scene in Latin ("Excelsior," which means Ever Upward). The flag, which dates back to the Revolutionary War period, was adopted in 1909. |
