Flag Meaning: Colors of the flag are red, white and blue - two horizontal stripes and one vertical. The abbreviation of the state appears in gold letters on the blue vertical stripe. A star separates the letters. There are gold banners above and below the letters with dates. The top displays the date of the Mecklenburg declaration - the date of the first meeting of NC citizens that declared their freedom from Great Britain (May 20, 1775). The bottom displays the date for the Halifax Resolves - the first official action by an entire colony calling for independence from Britain (April 12th, 1776). The flag was adopted in 1885. |
